Lithuanian Romeo and Juliet

The national commotion and the aura that was created around these events were such that Pedro and Inês‘ as well as Žygimantas Augustas and Barbora‘s love stories could not go unnoticed by European writers and artists. The first known literary treatment dates from the 14th century, and since then the stories has inspired a diversity of approaches that is comparable only to the story of Romeo and Juliet.

The love stories of these pairs confound us by its similarities – increadibly strong feelings of the lovers that defeated many of obstacles but the death, their feelings were not accepted by their families‘ members, the solemn funeral for beloved women. However Barbora became a queen while being alive and Inês already after her death. Pedro was out for revenge and Žygimantas Augustas felt that inside himself; in here probably we see and the differences in temperament.

In XVI century the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland united into one country, into The Commonwealth of Both Nations (Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth). The grand duke of Lithuania became the king of Poland either.

After death of his father, in 1548 Sigismund II Augustus without elections succeeded his father and ruled both countries. In Vilnius he built remarkable palace in renaissance style. At that time Vilnius became one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Vilnius, where passed his beautiful youth, where he fell in love with his first and last love Barbora Radvilaite, and later remained the favorite city of Sigismund. He was coming here from Krakow to live for a while.

Before starting to live in Vilnius and before becoming king, Sigismund was married already, but his wife, Elizabeth from Habsburgs soon died. At that time young and pretty widow, Barbora Radvilaite Goštautiene, lived near his Royal Palace. Sigismund deeply fell in love with her. From Royal Palace through the garden to the Palace of Radvilos family Sigismund ordered to build covered access, where the lovers were meeting.

The woman, Barbora Radvilaite, according to the writings of her contemporaries, was one of the most beautiful women in Europe. She was tall for her times (162 cm), with a slim, shapely body, blonde hair and even white teeth. Moreover, Barbora had an interest in fashion and cosmetics, she used perfumes and face powder. Besides her feminine charms, she was educated and intelligent.

Once Barbora‘s brother Nicolaus the Brown and her cousin Nicolaus the Black visite her during her date with Sigismund. They requested the king to marry her, because is being putting indignities upon the name of their family according to the talks of people about their couple. Sigismund accepted and soon happened the secret marriage where only family of Radvilos and their relative Kesgaila participated. Although Radvilos was the most powerful Lithuanian family, but the father of Sigismind and the nobility of Lithuania and Poland resisted to this marriage. Consequently in the beggining the marriage was not declared. Sigismund went to Krakow to tell his parents about his Denire to marry Barbora, but they were intractable. Father of Sigismund died soon without knowing about his son‘s wedding.

At that time Barbora lived in palace of her family in Dubingiai. After realising the death of his father, Sigismund ordered to bring her wife to Vilnius, where she was accepted as a Grand Duchess. But it was needed the acceptance of Poland also. The queen Bona Sforza had the strongest feelings against Barbora. Bona moved to Mozurai with her daughters when his son and Barbora were on the way to Poland. Bona insisted polish nobility to demand devorce from Sigismund because the marriage is not equal – Barbora was not from Royal family, while powers of Europe did not show any discontent. In two years polish yielded a point and on 7th May 1550 Barbora was in state declared a queen of Poland.

But their happiness has not lasted long. On 8th May 1551 Barbora died from hard and unknown desease. Some people say that she was empoisoned by Bona Sforza who detested Barbora. Others say that she died from cancer. It had been Barbara's wish to be buried in Lithuania, and a funeral cortege conveyed her body to Vilnius, where her crypt till now is found in Vilnius Cathedral near the first Sigismund‘s wife Elizabeth coffin. Sigismund went all the distance from Krakow to Vilnius on foot showing his sorrow and mourning. The death of Barbora had the biggest effect to Sigismund in his life. He ordered to drape in black the walls of his rooms and all the palace sank in mourning. He has never forget his beloved wife. Although later he married the sister of his first wife Katherina of Habsburgs (1553), but he has not find the happiness in family and they lived separated. She went to Wien. The remembering of beloved Barbora lead Sigismund all the rest of his life.

Portuguese Romeo and Juliet

Inês Pérez de Castro was a Galician noblewoman, daughter of Pedro Fernandez de Castro. She is best known as lover and posthumously declared lawful wife of King Peter I of Portugal, and therefore Queen of Portugal.

Inês came to Portugal in 1340 as a maid of her cousin Infanta Constance of Castile, recently married to Prince Peter, the heir to the Portuguese throne. The prince fell in love with her and started to neglect (nesirupinti) his lawful wife, endangering the already feeble relations with Castile. King Afonso IV of Portugal, Peter's father, disliked Inês's influence on his son and waited for their mutual infatuation to wear off, but it did not.

Afonso IV tried several times to arrange for his son to be remarried, but Peter refused to take a wife other than Inês, who was not deemed eligible to be queen. Afonso IV banished Inês from the court and sent her back to Castile in 1344 after Constance's death, but Peter remained with her. After several attempts to keep the lovers apart, Afonso IV ordered Inês's death. On 7 January 1355 (while Pedro was away from home), the King called his counsellors to a meeting in the Castle of Montemor-o-Velho, at the end of which he finally decided to send three of his courtiers - Pêro Coelho, Álvaro Gonçalves, and Diogo Lopes Pacheco - to the Monastery of Santa Clara in Coimbra, where Inês was detained, in order to kill her. People believe that her blood still stains the red stone-bed of the spring on this estate, where she is said to have cried out for the last time, while being pierced by the daggers of the executioners. When Peter heard that Inês had been killed, the terrible news drove him into a fury – rebelled against his father, causing civil war.

Peter became King of Portugal in 1357. As soon as he was crowned, and in spite of his promises of forgiveness, King Peter recovered two of Inês' assassins from Castile, where they had sought refuge (the third had escaped to France). He then had them tortured and executed in a barbaric but highly symbolic way: from one of the men who had killed the love of his life, the heart was ripped out of the body through his back, and from the other, the heart was pulled out through the chest. All this happened in front of the Royal Palace, where the King was able to watch the terrible scene while having dinner!

He then stated that he had secretly married Inês, who was consequently the lawful queen, although his word was, and still is, the only proof of the marriage. He had Inês's body exhumed and forced the entire court to swear allegiance to it as queen. She was later buried at the Monastery of Alcobaça where her coffin can still be seen. Afterwards, the accounts of Pedro's actions mix reality with legend. Some say that the tomb was placed opposite Pedro's own grave, so that they could look into each other’s eyes on the day of the last judgment. Others go even further and say that, once in Alcobaça, Pedro had Inês placed on the throne, put the royal crown on the skull, and forced the entire court to swear allegiance to the dead Queen, by kissing the hand of the corpse. One thing is known for sure: the eighth King of Portugal was moved by strong feelings that united him to the queen of his heart and, according to the royal chronicler Fernão Lopes, he was consumed by a „great madness“.

„Agora é tarde; Inês é Morta“ (“It’s too late; Inês is dead”) is a Portuguese saying used in everyday life. By continuing to use it more than 550 years after Inês' death, people still evoke one of the most tragic heroines of all time, whose story is rooted not only in Portuguese history and language but also in universal myth and fable.

Barbora tuo tarpu gyveno Radvilų dvare Dubingiuose.

1357-aisiais Pedro tapo Portugalijos karaliumi.

Ele nunca esquecer a esposa amada.

Pedro Álvares Cabral (about 1467/1468/1469 – about 1520) was a Portuguese navigator and explorer. Cabral is generally regarded as the European discoverer of Brazil (22 April 1500).
Cabral is thought to have been born in Belmonte, in the Beira Baixa province of Portugal. He must have had excellent training in navigation and a large amount of experience as a seaman, for King Manuel I of Portugal considered him competent to continue the work of Vasco da Gama.
His commission was to establish permanent commercial relations and to introduce Christianity wherever he went, using force of arms if necessary. The nature of the undertaking led rich Florentine merchants to contribute to the equipment of the ships and also led priests to join the expedition. Among the captains of the fleet, which consisted of 13 ships and 1,500 men, were Bartolomeu Dias, Pêro Vaz de Caminha, Sancho de Tovar and Nicolau Coelho, who was the companion of Vasco da Gama. Vasco da Gama himself gave the directions necessary for the course of the voyage.
The fleet of thirteen ships left Lisbon on 9 March 1500. On leaving the Cape Verde Islands, they sailed in a decidedly southwesterly direction. On 22 April Cabral landed on the coast of Brazil. Believing the newly-discovered land to be an island he gave it the name of Island of the True Cross (or Island of Vera Cruz) and took possession of it by erecting a cross and holding a religious service. It was taken back to Brazil for the inauguration of Brasilia in 1960.
Pedro Cabral resumed his voyage on 3 May 1500. Cabral continued to the Cape of Good Hope, Mozambique, Melinde, Madagascar and India. He arrived in Portugal with only 4 of 13 ships 1501. Cabral died, largely forgotten, around 1520. He has been honored on a number of postage stamps, including one in a set of Brazilian stamps to mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery. In Brazil, he is depicted on the 1 cent coin, and also on a special edition of the R$10 note.

Vasco da Gama (1469?-December 24, 1524), was a Portuguese explorer who was the first person to sail from Europe to India. From the early 15th century, the nautical school of Henry the Navigator had been extending (praplatinti, tęsti) Portuguese knowledge of the coast of Africa. From the 1460s, the goal had become one of rounding that continent's southern extremity and gaining direct access to the riches of India, mainly black pepper and other spices. Born in Sines, Portugal, da Gama was just shy of thirty years old as these long-term plans were coming to fruition (išsipildymas).
Bartolomeu Dias had returned from rounding the Cape of Good Hope and exploring as far as the Fish River in modern-day South Africa, while from India Pedro de Corvilhã had explored south for some of the distance intervening between Dias' explorations and the subcontinent. It remained only for the two segments to be joined into one voyage.
This task was given to Da Gama's father, Estêvão da Gama, but he died before he could begin. Vasco was then given the job on the strength of his work for the Portuguese crown along the Gold Coast of Africa. On July 8, 1497 four ships (the São Gabriel, the São Rafael, the Berrio, and a storage ship of unknown name) left Lisbon and the voyage began.

By December 16 they had passed the Fish River and continued on into waters unknown to Europeans. With Christmas pending they gave the coast they were passing the name Natal, which it retains to this day. By January they had reached modern-day Mozambique, Arab-controlled territory on the East African coast that was part of the Indian Ocean's network of trade. Having got that far, da Gama was able to employ a pilot at Malindi, who brought the expedition the rest of the way to Calicut (the exact Malayalam name is Kozhikode) on the southwest coast of India on May 20, 1498. Sometimes violent negotiations with the local ruler (the samoothiri raja, usually anglicized as Zamorin) ensued in the teeth of resistance from Arab merchants. Eventually da Gama was able to gain an ambiguous letter of concession for trading rights, but had to sail off without warning after the Zamorin insisted on his leaving behind all his goods as collateral. Da Gama kept his goods, but left behind a few Portuguese with orders to start a trading post.

Upon his return to Portugal in September 1499, da Gama was richly rewarded as the man who had brought to fruition a plan that had taken eighty years. He was given the title "Admiral of the Indian Ocean", and on February 12, 1502 he sailed again with a fleet of twenty warships to enforce Portuguese interests. Pedro Álvares Cabral had been sent out two years earlier (on which voyage he incidentally discovered Brazil) and found that those at the trading post had been murdered, encountered further resistance and bombarded Calicut.

The first monarch of Portugal: the woman ruler in Medieval Ages

When king Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile, who was the lord of the County of Potugal, died in 1109, his country had passed to his daughters – the official heir and Queen was Urraca of Castile, and County of Portugal was held by Countess Teresa and her husband, Henry of Burgundy.

Normally when the anterior lord dies, the vasal should promise to remain faithful to his successor. However, Henry of Burgundy, invaded Leon after death of his father-in-law, hoping to add it to his lands. He died shortly after that and his wife Teresa was left to deal with the difficult military and political situation. The invasion of Leon was not the only problem. At the time the Moors were willing to reconquer the Iberian Penisula. The Countess Teresa took on the responsibility of governement, and, unxpectedly, she managed to hold the situation over, presenting perfect ruling and military skills. In recognizing her victory in defending Coimbra from Muslims she was called „Queen“ by pope Paschal II. Until that period Portugal was only a county.

The fact that she was named the Queen by pope was very important for Teresa, because she was illegitimate child of King Alfonso and Ximena Moniz, and in Medieval Ages the fate of those children was very difficult. She was lucky first getting married to a nobleman, being named a Countess, and finally the Queen. She was lucky, but she also was clever and managed to improve and retain her position.

Now she was in equal position with her half-sister, Queen Urraca. And in 1116 in an effort to expand her power, Teresa fought her half-sister and continued pursue a larger share in the Leonese inheritance. Some years later she married a powerful Galician nobleman, Count of Trava. The Count had rejected his first wife to marry Teresa. Their marriage had lasted for ten years until Teresa‘s death in 1130.

After some time the luck in military affairs abandoned the Queen. In 1121 she was captured while fighting her half-sister on the northern border of her country. Negotiations of peace were started. It was decided that Teresa would go free, and would remain as Portugal‘s ruler, but Portugal was to be only a county and a fief of Leon.

Years passed and the main Portuguese lords rebelled against the Queen. The reason was the Queen‘s alliance with Galicia which did not suit Portuguese nobles. After short civil war the Queen Teresa was deposed. Her own son was on the side of the rebeliants and helped to defeat his mother‘s troops. The Queen was forced to go into exile in the County of Galicia. Teresa died soon afterwards.

Although she was abandoned by her people in the end and even her son betrayed her in order to get County of Portugal as a fief, bur still she was the first ruler of this country, who managed to achieve nearly independence, changing for a while a county to a kingdom .

Pagal to meto papročius, mirus ankstesniajam senjorui, vasalas turėdavo prisiekti ištikimybę jo paveldėtojui.
