New Year Traditions in Portugal
New Year is a popular celebration all over the world. Its festivity, gaiety and amusement are felt practically in all countries, especially in Portugal. It is worth discussing Portuguese New Year celebration traditions and customs since they are distinct from other countries and have their own peculiarities.
To begin with, the New Year in Portugal is the perfect time to have fun and enjoy the holidays, therefore, it is celebrated with fun and great passion. All Portuguese people get really excited and welcome the New Year with joy and merriment. New Year in Portugal is welcomed with a midnight party which may take place merely at home with the dearest family and relatives or in a luxurious restaurant, bar or a club together with a lot of friends. Where to celebrate the New Year depends on each person‘s wishes and expectations: those who wish to congratulate the forthcoming year quietly and cosily, prefer celebrating with family members and those willing to great the New Year in a lavish and exclusive way, usually organise a huge party outside their homes.

Despite the fact that is it already a 21st century, many Portuguese people tend to turn back and celebrate the New Year according to their ancestors’ traditions. The first custom which catches my eye and is clearly distinct from other countries’ traditions is the custom of having twelve grapes on the New Year‘s Eve midnight. All the twelve grapes are eaten from a bunch as the clock strikes twelve. Each grape is eaten with one wish for each month, and everyone drinks champagne. This ancient tradition is special and it is believed that twelve grapes will ensure twelve happy months for the coming year.
Talking about other Portuguese mouth-watering dishes besides grapes is pork served on New Year's Eve. This custom is based on the idea that pigs symbolize progress; the animal pushes forward, rooting itself in the ground before moving. Thus, roast pig is served for the New Year in Portugal. Furthermore, since fish is inseparable from Portuguese cuisine, fish dishes are also commonly served. Among most popular dishes is salted cod, know as Bacalhau. Desserts also play an integral part in Portugal‘s New Year celebration. The most popular desserts include arroz doce (rice pudding with cinnamon) and pasteis de nata, bola de berlim, pão-de-ló (sweet cakes and pastries with rich taste).

Another popular New Year tradition, especially in northern Portugal, is children singing carols, i.e. Christmas songs. The Portuguese children go into the streets and usually visit other people‘s houses singing and in turn receiving treats and coins. Those who are singing are called the Janeiras (New Year’s carollers). This tradition is followed since it is believed that carols bring good luck for the people in Portugal on New Year. I consider this tradition really sweet and charming, as it takes people back to earlier times; hearing young children singing in the streets is really rare nowadays, therefore, it is worth waiting for the New Year in Portugal in order to remember childhood and other warm memories.

Inseparable New Year celebration attribute is also noisemaking and fireworks. This tradition is considered to have originated from ancient times, when noise and fire were thought to curtail evil spirits and bring good luck. As a result, Portuguese people retain this tradition in order to have lots of luck and protect themselves from all the demons and evil spirits. Since Portuguese enjoy amazing shows, various amusing attractions, noisemaking and fireworks is all what they have been waiting for all year. During the New Year fest, vivid, colourful and breath-taking salutes are fired into the sky, and this attraction is really gripping and unforgettable. Kissing the beloved people at midnight New Years Eve parties is also a very common tradition. It is practiced not only to share the New Year moment with the love but also to ensure that the love and affection remains steadfast throughout the year. Portuguese people also believe in having a year filled with happiness and success, therefore, they stick to the custom of wishing each other good luck for the coming year.

As can be noted, the New Year celebration in Portugal is really entertaining and having its own charm. While some of the traditions are common to other countries (fireworks, champagne toasts, wishing good luck to each other), such customs as eating twelve grapes and singing carols remain distinctive in Portugal. So let‘s say “Feliz Ano Novo!“ (Happy New Year!) and visit Portugal to explore this unique culture and get familiarised with New Year celebration peculiarities.

Naujųjų Metų tradicijos Portugalijoje

Nepaisant to, kad gyvename XXI-ame amžiuje, dauguma portugalų laikosi senovinių Naujametinių papročių.
