José de Sousa Saramago – portugalų rašytojas, poetas, dramaturgas, eseistas, Nobelio premijos laureatas. Tai pirmasis ir kol kas vienintelis portugalų rašytojas, sulaukęs tokio aukšto įvertinimo. Vieni žymiausių jo darbų – „Aklumas“ ir „Rikardo Rejišo mirties metai“ – yra išversti ir į lietuvių kalbą.

Jose Saramago stilius – unikalus. Atsivertęs knygą, sutrinki – autorius nepripažįsta jokių skyrybos ženklų, išskyrus tašką ir kablelį, į tekstą įpina dialogus ir juos pradeda didžiąja raide, todėl iš pradžių tekstą sunku skaityti. Tačiau ilgainiui pripranti, ir net nejauti skyrybos ženklų „trūkumo“.

Man labiausiai patikusi knyga – Rikardo Rejišo mirties metai”. „Rikardo Rejišo mirties metus“ galima interpretuoti tikrai ne vienu aspektu. Viena vertus, tai portugalo, grįžusio į gimtąją šalį po ilgos emigracijos Brazilijon istorija, o kartu ir bet kurio namo grįžusio emigranto, jo bandymo vėl priprasti prie pamirštos, Taip pat ir meilės istorija.. Savotiškai įdomus yra ir romano herojus Rikardas Rejišas, gydytojas ir poetas, kurio gyvenimas taip ir lieka mįsle, galima tik spėti, kad viskas nėra taip paprasta ir nekalta, kaip atrodo iš pirmo žvilgsnio. Tačiau ne vien tai intriguoja skaitytoją. Rikardas Rejišas – vienas iš portugalų poeto Fernando Pessoa slapyvardžių. Sakytume, nieko ypatingai keista, jei klajonėse po Lisaboną Rejišo nelydėtų... pats Pessoa, pakilęs iš kapo, į kurį romano pradžioje buvo palydėtas.

Taigi savotiška knyga. Kai kas pasakytų, keistoka. O man ji pasirodė tiesiog įdomi.

Jose Saramago’s style is unique. When the reader opens the book, he gets confused - the author does not recognize any punctuation other than a point and a comma. Many of his paragraphs extend for pages without pausing for dialog, which Saramago chooses not to delimit by quotation marks; when the speaker changes, Saramago capitalizes the first letter of the new speaker's clause. But these difficulties shouldn’t frighten away the reader – later, you get used to it.

"The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis" is the book I really enjoyed reading. The novel addresses several powerful literary themes, but most of them

indirectly. It can be interpreted like a story about the return home after long years in Brazil and also it is a story about all emigrants who come back home and attempt’s to get used to forgotten. Moreover this was a love story – actually two love stories, which are difficult to describe.

The main character – Ricardo Reis is a doctor and a poet, whom life seems to be a mystery, but there is a feeling that everything seems to bee not so bright. But the main intrigue is that Ricardo Reis is one of heteronyms used by the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. It w

on’t be so interesting if during the days he does not be followed by … Fernando Pessoa, who died in the begging of novel.

Some people would say it is strange book. But for me it is the book I truly enjoyed reading.

José de Sousa Saramago é um escritor, roteirista, jornalista, dramaturgo e poeta português. Foi galardoado com o Nobel de Literatura de 1998.

Saramago é conhecido por utilizar frases e períodos compridos, usando a pontuação de uma maneira não convencional. Os diálogos das personagens são inseridos nos próprios parágrafos que os antecedem, de forma que não existem travessões nos seus livros: este tipo de marcação das falas propicia uma forte sensação de fluxo de consciência, a ponto do leitor chegar a confundir se um certo diálogo foi real ou apenas um pensamento. Muitas das suas frases (i.e. orações) ocupam mais de uma página, usando vírgulas onde a maioria dos escritores usaria pontos finais.

"O Ano da Morte de Ricardo Reis" é um romance escrito em 1984 por José Saramago cujo protagonista é o heterónimo Ricardo Reis, de Fernando Pessoa. O personagem que empresta o nome à obra retorna a Lisboa em 1936, após uma ausência de 16 anos, e aí se instala observando e testemunhando o desenrolar de um ano trágico, através do qual o leitor é levado a sentir o clima sombrio em que o fascismo se afirma na sociedade, antevendo-se um futuro negro na história de Portugal, Espanha e Europa. Além disso, esta foi uma história de amor - na verdade, duas histórias de amor, que são difíceis de descrever. O principal personagem - Ricardo Reis é um médico e poeta, a quem a vida parece ser um mistério.

Algumas pessoas dizem que livro é estranho. Mas para mim é o livro que eu realmente gosto.
